Sneaky Little Tarts is Shawn Thia’s pineapple tart brand
Just what exactly can’t Shawn Thia do? Man is an actor, model, and now we can add successful pineapple tart entrepreneur into the mix as well. Inspired by a family friend’s recipe, Sneaky Little Tarts is the touching story of a lost childhood memory, resurrected upon adulthood.
His first batch of pineapple tarts sold out within the first day of launch, leaving many of us sorely disappointed.
Thankfully though, he still has some stock left, and will be selling a mere 50 sets at Artbox 2024 this weekend. Once they’re sold out, they’re sold out for real, he warns us with a wink.
If you can’t go down to Artbox, Shawn’s also having a giveaway on his Instagram page.
These sneaky tarts themselves are smol, not much bigger than a 50 cent coin, and true to Shawn’s word, the filling straddles the perfect balance between sweet and tart. We found the filling got sweeter as we chewed more, and also enjoyed the generous pineapple bits for that extra texture.
Huat the tart
Shawn says he grew up eating the pineapple tarts from a family friend, Auntie Jasmine. She used to make them by hand, a process that was “backbreaking work”. While delicious, the treats were never made for sale, as they would have “lost money” due to ingredient and manpower costs.
When Auntie Jasmine retired, Shawn also stopped eating pineapple tarts – for a good 6 years, he tells us. But he never stopped thinking about these lost tarts, and eventually bought over the recipe last year.
After a period of R&D and finding a central kitchen to take care of production, Shawn eventually launched his tarts last week, to rip roaring success.
