Singapore’s Live Turtle Museum is located at Yishun
Situated right beside what was known as ORTO, the Live Turtle Museum is Guinness World Book of Records-recognised as the largest collection of tortoises and turtles. Home to over 200 turtles and tortoises, spanning more than 60 species, this unique sanctuary offers a range of activities, from interactive experiences to educational insights that appeal to all ages.
We’re talking about quirky creatures such as the mata-mata, a land-based turtle whose rough and spiky exterior is reminiscent of a typical forest floor. There’s also the massive alligator snapping turtle, which can weigh up to 80kg and have the bite strength to snap off human fingers.
There’s even a double-headed, six-legged tortoise wandering around! Talk about seeing double.
Get up close and personal with turtles
This isn’t just a look-don’t-touch kind of place. At the museum, you can actually feed and pet some of these shelled celebrities. A bunch of vegetables and a container of dry pellets cost $2 each – a worthy price to support this indie sanctuary!
Over here, each animal’s environment is made for its residents. The land-dwelling tortoises are generally housed in open air enclosures, so you can freely pet these gentler and less bitey reptiles. Water-based turtles meanwhile are kept in aquariums so you can marvel at them at a safe distance.
Conservation efforts
Beyond being just a tourist attraction, the Live Turtle Museum is deeply involved in conservation efforts. It operates as a sanctuary for rescued turtles and tortoises, providing them with a safe habitat and contributing to global efforts in reptile conservation.
The museum also engages the community with opportunities to volunteer, helping in the daily care of these creatures and learning about environmental stewardship first-hand.
Interact with turtles and tortoises at the Live Turtle Museum
The Live Turtle Museum is an educational adventure that offers visitors of all ages the opportunity to interact with, learn about, and contribute to the conservation of turtles and tortoises.
Whether you’re a family looking for a fun educational outing, a student eager to learn about reptile conservation, or simply a wildlife enthusiast, the museum offers an enriching experience that is both informative and engaging.
Unfortunately, the Live Turtle Museum will not be at its current home for much longer, as they are slated to move by the end of 2024. Its new home will be located at Khatib.
