Kantin At Jewel Changi is serving an edible sponge cake for the month of April 2024
You’ve heard of sponge cake, but Kantin at Jewel Changi takes the term to new heights with their newest dessert item, a realistic-looking, yet completely edible sponge cake, served with suds and liberal amounts of dishwashing liquid.
To mark April Fools’ Day, the cake will be available for the entire month of April, and Kantin has spared no expense in making the cake look as much like a dishwashing sponge as possible.
As seen on TikTok creator @deeniseglitz’s video, a rubber gloves-clad waiter comes along to properly explain the dish, describing the sponge as being “better than Scotch Brite”, and that there’s a side of a “soy sauce from the last customer’s plate”.
The yellow and green ‘sponge’ is actually a lemon butter cake with English orange marmalade, while the suds are made with a lemon flavouring. Finishing off the dessert is the green ‘dishwashing liquid’, which is actually a pandan-lime syrup.
In fact, the dish isn’t even new! Kantin has been serving the same sponge cake since 2022 at their home outlet in Kuching, Malaysia.
While you might expect the reviews to be polarising, the sponge cake actually has pretty good reviews, with some saying it just tastes like ‘a warm lemon sponge cake’.
Kantin retails the sponge cake at S$18++.
