Japanese Appliance Brand Balmuda Opens First Physical Store In Singapore
You’ve seen it all over your TikTok FYP, and now it’s finally here. The toaster made by Japanese appliance brand Balmuda – creatively named “The Toaster” – is now on sale in Singapore. You can even head down to its physical store at Takashimaya to see it for yourself, and grab some crunchy toast while you’re at it.
What the heck is a Balmuda
For the uninitiated, the Balmuda toaster reportedly makes some of the best toast in the world, thanks to its proprietary inclusion of a water tank. You have to fill this tank with a tiny scoop, helpfully provided with each purchase. Allegedly, for best results, you should use shokupan (aka Japanese milk bread), thanks to its thick cut, pillow-like softness, and sweet flavour.
First, the water is used to steam the bread over a low temperature, turning it soft and fluffy. Then, the heat is turned up, browning your carb into a crispy, decadent experience.
Of course, while it’s primarily used for toasting toasts, the Balmuda toaster can also revive stale breads and baked goods such as croissants and pastries, further elevating those breads that you bought on a whim 3 weeks ago and completely forgot.
Just take a look at these bagels:
As you can probably tell by now, this is not your average toaster. The Balmuda toaster was created for, and specifically for reheating breads in most forms. No reheating fries and nuggets in this toaster, but there exists a pizza mode, since pizza is technically a bread. Kinda.
With this recipe from @aflouryspace, it seems the toaster can also be used for a solid garlic bread.
Where can I buy this toaster?
Even before the opening of the Balmuda store, excited Singaporeans could already get their hands on the their toaster on various online avenues, such as Lazada and Shopee – both links unsponsored. Of course, these options tend to be parallel imports, which means post-sales service and warranties are generally lacking.
When bought at the Takashimaya store though, the toaster comes with technical support in the form of a couple of phone numbers.
Available in black and white, the Balmuda toaster is available for the low low price of $539. An absolute steal, we say.
The Balmuda store also carries an electrical kettle (equally creatively named “The Pot”), which retails for $299. As much a steal as the toaster, we’re sure.
